Budopunkt, inspired by Japanese martial arts, is a sports, health and lifestyle products shop that was opened in Tallinn in 1997.

Our relationship with sports and martial arts began in 1978, when the company’s founder Igor, under great secrecy, started karate training (back then, karate was banned throughout the Eastern Bloc). Ultimately, however, the determined Igor came to be a two-time Soviet Union karate champion, a top trainer, the founder of a sports club, and a judge.  Establishing a company selling martial arts equipment in 1997 was a logical continuation of Igor’s career. Ten years later we opened our first online shop, in 2014 we opened online shops in Latvia and Finland, and today, we operate all over the world.

Awards and recognitions

  • In 2016, Budopunkt was in the top three in Estonia’s most user-friendly online shops competition in the category of ‘Sport and hobbies’
  • In 2017, Budopunkt won the second prize in the ‘rebranding’ category of the Estonian Design Awards
  • In 2018, Budopunkt was named ‘Gazelle Company 2018’, an award which is given to Estonian companies which have grown their turnover and profit more than 50% over the past three years. Only 1% of all Estonian companies receive this award.

Where does the name Budopunkt come from?

The Japanese word ‘budo’ in the name Budopunkt is often translated as ‘martial arts’ or ‘war route’.
But there are also other interpretations.

The character ‘bu’, marking the first half of the word, consists of two components, one of which stands for ‘weapon/violence’, while the other refers to the verb ‘stop/end’. ‘Do’, the second part of the word, refers to a ‘route, target, or lifestyle’.

Therefore, not the route of war but the route of peace, not violence but putting an end to violence.

We believe that carefully selected sports and healthcare products contribute to everyone’s aspirations for a healthier, more diverse and courageous life.
